Mario Kart 8 was an exception then. Splatoon 1 had a direct one month before release because of the same reason ARMS got.

No, we don't need to see the entirety of Splatoon 2 (which is what these directs usually do) before release. Everyone already knows what they're getting, everyone knows what it's like and if anyone is doubtful about the gameplay, the testfires will be there for that. Do we really need to know all the stages, all the weapons, all the specials, the amiibo features, a full tour of the new plaza or what they plan to do post-release? I don't think so, really.

And? That certainly doesn't show they're against having directs right before launch. Also just checked and the 50 fact thingy for Smash Wii U was also around a month prior to launch.

I think it's kinda dumb to purposely withhold information and reasons to buy a game under the false idea that everyone who would be interested in the game has already decided to get it. Thankfully Nintendo agrees as they pretty much always fully unveil their games except for story spoilers of course.
