There last game released February 2014, and they haven't even hinted their next project yet. Usually, their devloppement cycle is around 3 years, with coproductions inbetween. Considering that we can't expect them to announce anything big shortly after E3, and that they wouldn't announce their big project less than half a year before release (I would have expected at least a year...), this will be by far the longest time we haven't seen anything of them.

What are they doing?

They announced back in early 2014 that their next project had begun development in late 2013 for the Wii U and that it was not another DK game or a Metroid game. After that, nothing was announced, though Retro had been active on Twitter prior to E3 events over the years leading to speculation that they might announce something, only to announce nothing.

If I had to take a guess about what's going on, I think that the project they were working on was most likely put on hold due to poor Wii U sales. The project was then most likely moved to the Nintendo Switch or may have been shelved altogether. The latter most likely didn't happen unless the game made liberal usage of the Wii U's Gamepad, something the Switch doesn't focus on so much.
