Well... it's not a complete failure. It is/was ahead of the 360 since launch. Of course, that will change when we reach the Kinect years, unless the Scorpio manages to revive it. But the major problem is that MS stopped making any and all attempts to compete in first party games. At the same time, almost every Xbox franchise has been selling pretty bad (Halo 5, GoW, Rare...). But it's still making profit and Xbox Live is always growing, plus stuff like EA Access and OG Xbox/360 BC is making them easy money with no risk.
So it's inbetween success and failure.
Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.
