I thought my opinion might prove controversial. Anyway, free mode would obviously solve the problem of playing on both sides, and possible even the story part, but obviously free mode and story don't go well together, so seeing the story from another perspective would suffer in my idea. That said, in my idea, the game wouldn't really take any sides in the story mode, storytelling-wise. It'd tell the story from an 'outside' perspective, then let you play the battle as the side that makes more sense somehow (typically the winner, I guess - winning as the losing side and then actually losing despite really winning always felt strange).

I think that partially depends on the stage. For example, Chi Bi and Fan Castle are definitely stages that you can win at but still see your side "lose". IIRC in the latest entries both of those scenarios end up with the objective changing to escape rather than defeating the enemy commander, so it still works.

Plus I love the hypothetical scenarios that DW8 added. Really enjoyed being able to alter how certain battles went and see how things could potentially have played out differently. I'd really like it if they continued down that route, maybe even added more than 1 hypothetical route even.  Surely there's not many more, if any, noteworthy historical battles left to add. But they can still do a lot with hypothetical scenarios!

That's why I said 'typically'. There are situations where playing on the losing side makes sense - not necessarily more than playing on the winning side, but still makes sense. Those two are good examples of battles where playing on the losing side makes sense.

I liked the idea of hypothetical scenarios but to be honest, they felt a bit half-assed. To really shine, they would have required even more attention than they got. Instead, once the story mode got to the hypothetical branch, it was a quick rush to the finish, with the possibility of some stalling stages where nothing interesting happened.
