It is not in their interest to enable cross-platform play. Since Sony controls more than half of the market, if your friend has a console, he probably has a PS4.  So, if you want to play with him, you'll buy a PS4.  For Nintendo and MS, the math is different.  It is better for them to allow cross-platform play.  

I hope that's not the case. That makes it sound like sony is 'too good' to be connecting with other companies. I don't really think that is the case.
