The wall is more about keeping as much of the drug cartel contained as possible. The hundreds of millions worth of hard drugs being smuggled in is the ultimate need that needs to stopped. It empowers the groups selling them to be able to purchase weapons and more product.

A wall would be a very expensive solution that wouldn't work all that well. Why the USA doesn't just send specialists to aid the Mexican government to help them fight the cartels is beyond me.

I'm not arguing for a wall, I'm explaining why it is suggested. Outside of joint military operations, how exacly could the US help fight the cartels? That is, if Mexico would ever accept that level of help from the US.
