If you can only afford one console and you are a "gamer" (as in you like a wide variety of games), I have to be honest and even as a Nintendo fan and say -- get a Playstation 4.
It's bound to have many games you'll like because there's simply so much developer support, it even has all the Japanese support with Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter now and things like Ni No Kuni 2, which who knows if they ever come out on Switch.
Switch is cool, but you really have to secure in the fact that it's mainly gonna be Nintendo IP, if you can't afford more than one platform and you really like to play a wide range of games .... go with the PS4. I would try to find a PS4 on a deal though or even used if possible.
