I have a smartphone but I don't use an account on it/download apps from the store. Voice chat isn't that important for me but it is helpful in some games such as Monster Hunter.
I don't see why they just didn't include a mic in the system or let you plug a wireless or wired headset into a jack or USB port. Hell even releasing an improved Wii Speak mic sounds better to me. Forcing people to use a phone app for voice chat is the dumbest fucking thing I've heard of besides Reggie's explanation for why they went that route.
