I think the idea in the original post had the right idea. Do a "This Week In History" post every week which looks back at maybe the top ten software numbers and hardware numbers for that week. Could make a post a day, one for each area and end the week with the worldwide numbers.
I think this is the best, most easily implemented feature.
As for charts, it would be nice to somehow have a way to cut the charts off at a certain point. I hate aligning N64/Gamecube/Wii numbers and then having to suffer through the current Wii data being crunched in since the N64 has had such a much longer lifetime. Perhaps make it so you could cut off the number of weeks of data shown.
I guess that's not relevant here though.
