I take it, you've missed all the Switch sales predictions. VGC consensus was 30-35m lifetime. Clearly, most people had no clue that Pokémon was going to come to Switch.

I just know that it has been super heavily rumoured (we even had the Pokemon Stars rumours, which, I'm not sure had an actual source, it was just a rather logical conclusion drawn from the fact that the Switch is a portable).

But I'll rephrase: I wasn't surprised at all by the fact that a mainline Pokemon is in development for the Switch. The only thing surprising about the announcement was that it was done in such a throwaway fashion as it was.
