Yeah but they probably felt that MK8 was the best MK they'd ever made. And it sold about half of what MK7 did and a quarter of MKWii. A strong case could made that millions of people are out there who would love MK8 but didn't get to play it.
That case is less strong for Smash IMO.
We've never had two Mario Karts on one console, so I'm betting that we don't see another one on Switch. Smash is the same way and I'd be surprised if they used up the entry on both franchises on ports of Wii U versions. Just my read.
