The sad thing is, people actually use the Xperia Play as an example of how a gaming phone wouldn't work. The thing had no connection to PSN and therefore no multiplayer games, no trophies, and no friends. It did not receive a single peice of software published by SCEWWS, let alone anything developed by them. It did not recieve any software from any of Sony's 3rd party parteners. The PlayStation Mobile Store was not a sanctioned Android app, so it required you to go into settings to give the phone permission to run it, then you had to download the portal from a page buried deep in Sonys website. There was never any marketing for it, it never received updates, and it was under powered compaired to even crap phones at the time.

It was basically a bad Android phone with a few bad Android games optimized for the slide out controls. It was built to fail, and it was a massive success at it. In no way at all does it give any example of what success a gaming phone could have in the market.
