| VideoGameAccountant said: I can see it happening. One thing to consider is Nintendo will be funneling the software pipeline of the 3DS, the Wii U AND the Vita all towards the Switch. Even though a PSP3 doesn't make much sense, Sony would likely do it to keep publishers and developers on their platforms. If they don't, all Japanese games would just come to the Switch. The other reason I see it happening is that Sony will think having a handheld will stop Switch. A lot of people aren't looking forward. They see PS4 doing well in the last few years and think Sony was on top of the world (Nintendo thought that too until the Wii U actually came out). Sony is in a very bad spot because TVs are declining and Switch is making a standard home console irrelevant. Sony will have to adapt. I think they'll see PSP3 as a saving grace but they'll be sadly mistaken. |
I agree that having a mobile option to access their game library is going to be absolutely vital in Japan. There is still a 20+ Million market in Japan for dedicated handhelds. Sony can not ignore this market if they want to continue to keep strong relations with Japanese developers. PlayStation 4 Home Consoles alone will likely max out around 10 - 12 Million. Switch on the other hand could do 25 Million or more. Sony needs a Portable PS4 to keep their ecosystem strong in Japan.
If Sony and Nintendo bring Cellular capabilities to PlayStation and Switch, I believe they could retake the Mobile market in whole in their home country. They could be looking at a market of 50 or 60 million units sold, if they allow handhelds to evolve.
