What about an interracial scene, would you say that people who look away out of digust during a scene where a black man is kissing a white woman are not racist?

lol this question answers it all!

Haha, yeah. That said, I know that I am a bit homophobic based on that... and also a little "fatphobic" if that is a word. Two things I am not happy about, but two things that are culturally induced. And also, have been getting over that with time, I would say I am about 5-10% as homophobic as I was when I was a teenager, 1/10th or 1/20th in other words. As above stated, I hold no hatred, just a bit of disgust for it that is completely involuntary, it is like being brainwashed.

Commenting on some above stuff:

Blaming religious culture is short-changing the issue, and not even close to accurate; it is mostly the accepted answer because it is fashionable to blame things on religion. Homophobia also exists, perhaps even more strongly, in non-religious culture; and in nations who never had a homophobic religious culture.

I grew up in a culture where the vast majority of people were non-religious. When I was a kid and a teenager, what was considered the most offensive insult was to be called gay. It was the synonymous with being called unmanly, wimpy, queer/weird, and effeminiate, wrapped all in one. Ironically, it was usually the few religious kids who were often the target of being called gay. It is largely about how most cultures of masculinity shape people, and because homosexuality is comparitively rare to heterosexuality.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
