You're still never getting a huge amount of shadows drawn at once in MH though, while the ones Shenmue does draw are less pixelated.

Maybe you don't understand what is being said here, most characters outside of Ryo in Shenmue don't even have shadows the amount of them drawn at a time is pretty much less than what MH is drawing it's even shown in some of the screens you yourself posted earliar. Shenmue has less pixelated shadows because of resolution and only giving select models shadows otherwise the game would have had to cut back to free up resources want an example here, the first 2 screens are even from the Xbox version of 2 but they kept the same coding so highlight well what I'm pointing out.

To add further to this Shenmue doesn't take much into account lighting unlike MH and on many occasions just doesn't draw them when the engine tells the game it's dark, the gif from before which I'll repost below is a good example of this as Ryo is standing dead in the light and doesn't have a shadow because the game is told not to draw it.

Meanwhile MH games at night:

As far as lighting goes, Shenmue actually has an advantage in that shadows actually react to dynamic light sources, as seen at 8:44 here:

As far as I recall, shadows in MH 3DS do not.
