I just don't want to have to buy another Switch to play games that can't play on the original models.

If they do something like this, a solution would be to do refreshes every three years but require that all games be compatible for the current Switch gen and the gen that came before it, ensuring that all Switch owners get six years of guaranteed software support.  One big problem with this would be how to show game compatibility between generations without it being confusing.
