It's not so much about the controls, it's about the presentation. N64 was using carts when CDs were the new hotness and had a 3 pronged controller that looked like it was designed for an alien species yet the system was a sales beast for years. And a lot of that was on the marketing.
And this isn't the first advert. It showed up in the Super Bowl ad for one. It has also been promoted in an ad with Splatoon since launch, which is interesting sorta marrying the two together as a pair of summer games.
