The resellability of physical games is an important consideration as well. I used to resell about 80% of the games I bought. Nowadays, I resell probably about half.
When I resold a lot, and stayed a year or more behind the release schedule, I was able to play video games for a net cost of about $100 per year. That was always my goal, and I usually hit it. I'm thinking my gaming hobby costs me more like $300 per year now, plus a few hundred of hardware once every few years.
