I think this was the right way to go. Too hard to tell a grown up Nate story I think. And there's no need to think about whether to adapt one of the game's stories or do a totally different one. Which either way would have lead to some people being disappointed.
The other good thing about young Nate, after UC4, is that they can also weave Sam into the story. So there are 3 protagonists, and likely conflict for being Nate's mentor/protector between Sam and Sully.
