Because the gameplay systems are so dated, it's not kind for newcomers to the series. If you'd like to go after the challenge, by all means. That said, those "dating sim elements" you criticize are pretty much the only thing that give the paper thin characters any sort of development IMO. I don't think the story in any of the Fire Emblem games is good enough to carry it. The strength is in the gameplay and level design.
