Great idea. Maybe except for the fact that there has probably never ever been a POTUS who was actually voted for by the majority of the whole population. And the same applies to almost every democratically voted government around the world in history.

One of the few exceptions might actually be the "democratically" voted government of the "german democratic republic" ("east germany"), where voter turnout was indeed very high, yet people could basically only vote for a single party. The bad news is: If that's your kind of democracy, you're about 30 years late.

What about Australia where voting is mandatory

Not sure if that's a great idea either since most of the time people don't want to bother reading what a party stands for. If you would force voting upon people you can expect a enormous rise of populism and lies during the campaign and a rise of single issue parties.
