Disgaea is quite a peculiar series on how it extends its play time.
For example, I like playing it for ridiculously long sessions because I have a lot of stuff to do in succession to achieve part of what I want, if you want to be able to face the strongest foes in the game, you'll have do a lot, a whole damn lot of planning, on how to upgrade your chars in several different ways to be able to do it, I'll gve you a example on how to max a char:

I want to max out a char, it'll take around 40 hours of investing just on that if I want to do it (if you know well what you are doing), so when I'm going for this I go for multiple chars at once to not have to redo some procress, which increases that time, though not 40+40+40, and that's why it's better to do it that way.

First you'll want to train you char enough to be even able to going on trying to max it, you'll have to pass bills to strenghten foes so beating them give you more experience and mana, and go learning and training you best skills at the same time, if it's a main character you might want to throw some reincarnations to help the end result be better but if it's a generic class you'll have to do it anyway to ascend to higher tiers and boost your base multipliers.

Once you have got on doing it enough, which will already take a good amount of hours, then you should go item hunting, until you can find a legendary copy of the best findable item and steal it for you (or be lucky with chests), which will be hard even after you trained as your gear is so much inferior to it your levels don't mind much and if you miss those steals you may end up dying, so you'll want to do some lesser tiers before aiming for the last tier to be able to avoid that, that will also take a lot of time.

Once you are able to get one of them, you'll probably want to have another decent items as well (which you should have done before aiming for it as I just said), because you'll have to level up that item and that means you can't use it in the process and that the foes inside its world are very strong as well.
You'll have to go thorugh the entire world of that item, beat the item god (which is REALLY strong) and steal the last tier item from the item god 2 after doing it, every item world consist of 100 levels, by the way.

Once you are able to steal that, you can now actually start trying to make it strong, 'cause yeah, even the base best tier item will mean nothing for your quest on beating the strongest foe(s), but you won't just have to level that item up as you did with the best findable item, you'll have to farm their own stats you want to boost, kind by kind, step by step, those are the residents, and now your quest to find the ones you want and start boosting their number or duplicating them will also be really time consuming, really, really time consuming, so here you'll want to boost all kinds of residents for all the items you'll want to max, which you'll have to have planned for before or do it now.

Once you are finally able to house all of them, which is probably the most time consuming part of the whole process, you can start going through that item world, leveling it up, but now being careful, because you'll have to make sure you get the bonus to overlevel it, as you can actually go way beyond level 100 with the items, even though they only have 100 levels.
This will actually be one of the quickest parts, as you are likely already pretty strong to deal with anything there, just being careful on what you do to take the most of that item. (oh, and I didn't mention that you'll likely want to level up the rest of your chars before doing that now, because it's a long process, unless you have the right residents to do it, that is, and you should have planned for it).

Once you have done it congrats! You have done it for one item for one char, each char can hold 4 different items and you can place a dozen on battles, and that's why doing all together is the best route to go.

Then if you really want the max stats you'll go trought reincanations now to boost it bit by bit on the chara world.

Now, the sheer planning and sequence of events you'll want to do that will take a lot of time and doing it bit by bit will just mess you up, so doing huge chunks of it, aka by several hours straight, makes it easier to keep right in the track.

But I end up following the pattern of playing for several hours on the main game anyway, you get used to it, Disgaea 5 wasn't letting me even sleep, lol.

That sounds very involved and makes me all the more sure that if I couldn't take the Switch out of the house with me, I'd never be able to put a significant enough dent in it.  Besides 1/2 hour lunch and 1 hour park sessions; I spend a lot of time visiting my parents on the weekends.  The Switch dock is very easy for me to pack up and take over there with me (and soon I'll have the option of just buying a spare dock and leaving it there permanently).  I wasn't ever doing that with a console.  In that regard, the Switch is far more convenient for me to put time into.
