You didn't need to, the combat systems didn't require it. You could stab enemies, or swing at them from different angles or varying strengths. That was enough for it to be both satisfying and effective.

But that's not the point, specifically:

It doesn't. it detects acceleration only.

That's enough though for it to still be able to respond to z-axis motions like thrusts or stabs in practice though.
