They may not have faith that enough people will be playing. The current strategy forces everyone looking to play online to join the same games, reducing waits and such.

I like to think this will be successful enough that it won't need such a trick, but I don't really mind the technique either; Splatoon is definitely one of those games you can pick up and play quickly and briefly, so a focus on streamlining the online process is helpful in that regard.

No, that would mean longer wait between matches, Splatoon matches are 3 min. long and you very fast go on next match.
