I'd personally get a kitten, if you have the choice. It's adorable watching it grow up, and you'll feel more attached to it that way. When I adopted Mao (my cat), I picked the most energetic kitten at the rescue, and he grew up to be one of the most social cats I've ever seen. Whenever I have a guest over, he'll sit on their lap like he's known them forever. :P
