I read this twist in the manga a while ago, and couldn't remember how it was done. I remember thinking it was anticlimactic at first, but in a way, it's interesting the way Reiner dropped the reveal like he did. The actual confirmation of it was a much more powerful moment. Like Eren, I liked Reiner a lot before this, so this twist kinda stung.
That being said, I wouldn't say it's random either...just something I didn't see coming the first time I read it.
