I've only played P4 and 5, but it doesn't seem so unreasonable to me that he'd prefer one over the other. I'd argue that SMT requires far more suspension of disbelief because of how disjointed everything is. I haven't played the older SMTs, but I don't see it when compared to the newest SMTs.
