I'll give The Mist a go then.

Other adaptaions i liked were Cujo, The Shining, Misery, Firestarter (1984),Cristine, and Stand by Me.  The Dark Half was alright as it followed the book more closely than most adaptations if i remember correctly (it's been a long time since I read/ watched that one and neither made much of an impression really).

I'd like to see people go back to the mini-series format now that special effects have come up to a decent level even in regular television.  The Stand and It could have done with better visuals and actors.

Even though I think Kubrick is overrated I also liked The Shining a lot Stephen King actually hates that version because its not a very close adaption of the book.

As is virtually always the case, yes, the book is better.  Time not withstanding the only two where I think I'd rather watch the movie than read the book are Stand by Me and Shawshank (Andy getting raped in increased detail always made me squimish).
