March 2011 NPD: 3DS ~400k
April 2011 NPD: 3DS ~200k (600k YTD)
May 2011 NPD: 3DS ~100k (700k YTD)

April 2017 NPD: Switch ~900k
I realize that the Switch hasn't clicked with you, but try to remove yourself from the equation and listen to the story the sales are telling.
