PROS
+ Level one theme is awesome.
+ There are a lot of glitches to take advantage of in this game. I recommend you do.
+ Playing on 3DS allows for save states. Use Them.
+ Because of NES limitations, Only 2 enemy sprites are allowed to be on screen at a time. To compensate for this it feels like each enemy is a one on one fighting game.
CONS
- No coop
- You have 3 lives, no continues to beat the entire game. There are 4 missions but mission 3 and 4 are divided into several sections. So, really its like 10 stages. There are also no health pickups. You recover health every time you beat a mission or move to a new section.
- There are minor platformer elements. You jump by pressing the punch and kick button at the same time which is kinda ackward; you also cant change direction mid jump. The annoying part is dick enemy placement - were going to make you jump over a pit only for a enemy to punch you into said pit because of minor delay when hitting the ground.
- There is a minor level up system. Everytime you level up you gain access to new moves, but these new moves are default moves in every other beat em up: being able to finish a combo, jump kick, grabing, throws ext. You have to earn default movesets in this game.
- Enemies have very little hit stun, can interrupt your combos and outright just duck combo finishers. Totally discourages you from using combos. A lot of footsies and hit n runs.... and jump kicks.
- Infamous wall in Mission 4. Right in the very beginning of the level is a wall with pillars that jet out and hit the player; they are totally random.... kills in 3 hits AND THEY ARE TOTALLY RANDOM. So we have 3 lives, no contines to get through like 8 zones divided by 4 missions and who ever the person to actually learn the game inside out to get there can potentially be pummeled to death by a wall.
Double Dragons is still heavily tied to its arcade structure; we want your quarters. It was not rethinkered to be a console friendly experience.
2/5 - Only fans of the genre/series will be able to find something to like about this game.
