Now here's my experience: when I bought it on day one in my local store there were groups of people already waiting in front of it and then run straight to the Switches when the gates opened, me being one of them. After ten seconds, I kid you not, the first batch they had was gone. Luckily they still had another batch behind the counter and that's where I got mine from. Some people bought all accessories on that day, some even bought two Switches at once.
Nowadays the situation hasn't changed, Switches are always sold out. If it happens that my store gets some stock it can sell it easily within a few days. I had just been there a couple of hours ago: no Switches, but a lot of those wheelies and 20 copys of MK8D.
The Gamestop being next to that store doesn't carry Switches at all, it sells all of them by preorder. They said they might still need some more months before reaching a point until some units hit their shelves.
