Nintendo is the king of the handheld market. It has no direct competition to fight with for sales. It doesn't really need to market their products in that market.  E3 is more about home consoles and switch is a part of it. It is in nintendo's best interest to pitch their hardware as strongly as they can to gamers and casuals. Everyone knows that nintendo home consoles are front loaded. We'll see how well the switch sells after it hits 15 to 20 mil. The real question is it gonna sell like a nintendo handheld or a nintendo home console. We'll see. 

Actually Vita was competition and 3DS destroyed it. That really doesn't matter, point is that Nintendo E3s are not reason why Wii U failed.
