So basically the hardcore Nintendo fans. Obviously in future when the price is cheaper or during the holidays they'll try and push for the kids and family market.

I think they should stick with this market for a while (through 2018). It should always be a strong emphasis point for the Switch. I'd even consider keeping that the focus through 2020, then releasing a mid-gen Switch update for older/core gamers, while at that time sliding the old Switch down for younger demos.

The New 2DS XL is perfect for the kids market and I think they plan to keep 3DS around for a while for that very reason. It's good enough for kids. It introduces kids to Nintendo IP, then by the time they're getting to that 11-13 age range, they can graduate up to the Switch.

I think they should target both but with the Switch launching out of a holiday season and with only really Zelda as the main seller they were absolutely right to target their older hardcore fanbase.

Going forward as more titles like splatoon,  Mario Kart,  Mario,  pokemon etc release they should target both older hardcore and younger kids and families.
