This really seems like a good way to separate the 3DS line from the Switch... it's basically a cheaper (both to manufacture and sales price), slimmer New 3DS XL, so I imagine they'll limit their production almost entirely to the new model for the rest of its lifespan. While Nintendo has always loved experimenting with 3D gaming, it really didn't catch on enough to justify the added expense/battery life etc, especially now that the price of the New 3DS XL would be trailing the Switch itself by only a little.
The resulting price gap between the Switch and this new 2DS helps. I suppose, given Nintendo's history with the gameboy and DS, we should have expected at least one more model for this thing lol
The smart move, though, was revealing the upcoming 3DS games and this new 2DS model prior to E3. I think they're doing these things now so as to not distract from what most people are actually interested in at E3 where, hopefully, most of the focus will be on the Switch.
