We'll know pretty quickly whether or not Mario Kart 9 is planned. If it's not planned, I'd expect extensive DLC for Mario Kart 8 DX. The advantage of getting 8 DX out is that Nintendo have a guaranteed big seller (I'd guess 5 million LT as a minimum), plus a new IP in Arms, developed by the Kart team, in the first few months of Switch's life.

It'd be easy to make Mario Kart 9 for 2019 or perhaps 2020 using the Kart 8 engine on Switch, with clear performance improvements shown from 8 on Wii U to the Switch version, and get even greater benefits in a couple of years. That being said, I do wonder if expecting Mario Kart 9 is a little un-imaginative. I think we might end up seeing something like Super Smash Kart, or Nintendo All-Stars Racing, in 2019.
