The hardware struggles to run that game at times, and that's a launch game. If EAD has bigger ambitions in the future, they are likely going to have to scale them back. The 25GB/sec memory bandwidth is problematic I think for Nintendo in particular. Even the Wii U has a memory pool of eDRAM that's considerably faster than that, but going with the stock Tegra X1 made sense precisely because they can just swap in new Tegra chips as time goes on. |
And it's also a rather rushed port of a wiiU game that runs perfectly in 720p HH mode. The game improves a lot on Switch post patch, with the few slowdowns in HH mode all but eliminated and drastically reduced sowdown in docked mode. There's really only two or three environments in the whole game where slowdown happens while docked and it's not drastic slowdown either.
This shows that BotW issues are optimization issues, not hardware issues.
That said I could see a 4k ready Switch Pro release down the line, with improved battery life on the go and improved docked performance for 4k. Nothing that would fragment the user base or create revision exclusives though. Nintendo haven't really done that in a big way since the GBC. Even the new 3DS only has one exclusive so far, with a second one on the way.
