That sentence was only there for the sake of comprehensiveness. I do not believe that VGC has enough credibility and respect to get console manufacturers and/or third party publishers on board. Even NPD could only convince some to share their digital sales data.

Yeah, that's why I didn't include that possibility in my initial question.

Checking bestseeller lists unfortunately only gives a rough indication at best (a somewhat better one if any of the games sales on the all-time lists can be tracked or have been revealed in the past.) Combined with relevant ratios you get educated guesses at best. Wich is interesting, but also a lot of work for mediocre results.

Updating digital numbers as they get released, just so they are at least represented might be a good compromise.

Not sure, but steamspy does it for steam. Developers have said its numbers are very accurate:

I always assumed they sniffed data packets or something? I really don't know what I'm talking about though. ;P

Unfortunately while Steamspy is the best digital tracker we have for PC it really can't be used as an indicator for consoles because of the diffrent audiences/buying habits/overhelming digital ratio on PC.

Never suggested they could. Point was, if they can do it for steam, that has to be a way to do it for consoles.
