I live in a Catholic country, but I've never heard of this. We just eat a bit less and more simple (at least, we're supposed to. Nobody actually does it.)
But probably it is an actual Catholic tradition, and it just got lost here. Most people don't go to church either (even on Easter), unless they're like 70 years old.
