In regard to the OP, capabilities isn't relfective to the generation. Wii, Wii U, and Switch are all considered next gen while having dated capabilities in the consoles realm.
Here's my prediction which could very well be wrong! X1 and Scorpio will be required to share games until a new Xbox One is released (perhaps 2021). From then on developers will be allowed to stop supporting the OG X1 if they desire while newer models will have to share games. That way each model gets atleast 8 years of notable support.
