They might cut the price of the New 3DS XL to something like $150 closer to the holiday season or maybe early next year. I think Nintendo ideally wants to replace 3DS with Switch (or at least the Switch platform, maybe not the form factor we are seeing at launch), but they will probably keep the 3DS family around in some form just to play it safe until they reduce manufacturing costs for Switch (allowing them to make the price more accessible), get developers (both internally and to some degree externally) on board and push out more software, build a viable installbase, etc. The New 3DS and 2DS will essentially play the role that GBA SP & Micro, PS2 slim, PS3 super slim, Xbox 360 S, Wii Mini played at the beginning of the life of their successor, ie they were kept around because the hardware was profitable, there was still a good backlog of games (and a few knew ones), and they provided a certain degree of a safety net should the new platform not do as well as expected (when introducing the DS, Nintendo had a plan to continue the GB line if the DS did not catch on; I suspect they have a similar kind of strategy with 3DS with regards to Switch).
