Mostly just the other two companies fucking up.
Microsoft managed to release a console that was weaker and $100 more expensive. Almost anything would win against that.

So, why did the 360 lose to a console that seemed weaker in the beginning, due to multiplats not being on par, and was $200 more expensive for 3 years?

Yeah, this is the cognitive dissonance resulting from when base assumptions about 360/PS3 are wrong. Nothing mysterious about it,
360 fans are disproportionately going to live in regions where 360 WAS dominant and thus have very different personal experience.
Yet the experience seen in those regions does not correlate to the overall global picture, and Sony had and has stronger global brand.
Had MS not goofed with PR, pricing, and design this gen, it's plausible they could be doing better in their core market (US/UK/AU).
Given Sony outsold MS globally with "DISASTER" PS3, it is EXPECTED a mere "EQUAL" offering would yield even larger global lead.
It's not even about that being "fair" or whatever to MS, that is just the reality of things.
