Well Sony probably made a fortune in licensing fees for their software (if that counts lol), that's where most of the money comes from for console manufacturers.
Even on a strong year for Nintendo Sony would be bringing in more revenue in software (at least since the height of the Wii died down), so it's not that surprising given 2016 is honestly the slowest year for Nintendo that I can recall... although if their mobile games count they did pretty well with Pokemon Go.
