If anything I think democrats try to have it both ways.

Pushing left wing agendas while pretending to be in the center because they aren't commies. Although, people like Bernie and his supporters seem to be sympathetic or even open to communism.

Basically, left wing is the catch all term for more socialism, communism, big governement, etc. Not just the extreme.
