You disgust me!

I like a lot of Japanese stuff, just not their games with over-the top flying around doing crazy tricks and mashing buttons like a madman combat!

This is somewhere between Devil may Cry and a souks game as some enemies do a lot of damage and can kill you in one or two hits. Yes you can spam buttons, but you have to know when to evade, when to back out and fight from a distance and when to go in close.

Dying also causes you to lose your skill stats where you have your extra health, attack stats, evade stats, speed stats etc and they are hard to come by compared to other bits.

If you don't button mash, you are rewarded with some beautiful fluid combat that flows from enemy to enemy. It's like watching a symphony.

Also, it has minimal crazy. You have a double jump and a dash like in the PS2 Shinobi game that when timed correctly creates a witch time moment like in Bayonetta.

The finishing moves are also more down to earth where you either unleash a deadly combo or a devastating heavy attack. It's not over the top like Bayonetta.

I would argue the story and characters are probably some of the most grounded and hit home more so than TLOU as it deals with a lot of issues in a subtle way.
