I wouldn't call City of God underappreciated, as it's #21 on imdb with over 560k votes - it's also a fantastic movie that stays with you for decades.

Moon was already mentioned hm..

I really liked "Contact" when I first watched it in the cinema - don't expect much/any action though (I think it's trailers misrepresented it quite heavily)

For action fans I really can't recommend "The Equalizer" enough, one of my favorite Denzel Washington movies - and so is "Inside Man".
