A recent study found that while half the population of the UK knows what the Nintendo Switch is, only 32 percent of those who heard of it intended to buy one. If that’s the case worldwide, the Nintendo Switch may face a long, uphill battle in its attempt to overtake the Wii." Wait... what?! The population of the UK is 64.1 million. 64.1 * 0.5 * 0.32 = 10.26 million The Wii only sold 8.65 million in the UK! With those projected numbers, how is this an uphill battle? |
Or it could look like this.
18.9 million households. Half had heard of it, 32 percent of those households plan to buy one for the household. Or ~3 million.
Anyway, it all still sounds like good news for the Switch, but the Wii comparisons definitely sound like GameStop trying to gin up sales. It's in their best interest for the Switch to do well because a lot of physical stuff gets sold if it does. Pro controllers, extra joycons, stands, docks, cases. Lots of stuff that can't be purchased in a digital store.
Annecdotally, it sounds right to me. I'm more excited about the Switch than I've been about any product in a long time. I've already bought one physical and two digital games along with a case, a screen preotector, and a pro controller. I've never been this spendy with a system right out of the gate before. I'm also friends with a very PC gaming heavy household that has already bought 3 Switches, 3 copies of Zelda, and 3 pro controllers.
That's just four people though so who knows?
