If Steam is Microsofts biggest fear they are not acting like it. Its known that Microsoft tried to work with Sony because Sony was delving with their console in the multimedia marke (PS1), which they dominated with Windows. Microsoft most likely wanted their OS on every piece of Sony hardware like they did with Sega. Apparently both Sony and Nintendo told them no, thus, Microsoft is here.

What hot new IP has Microsoft created themselves this gen that can move Xbox forward? Answer is they havent. The only genre Microsoft has been good at making from scratch is simulations which ive been playing since I was a little kid (which is before the Xbox). Gears and Halo originally came from outside, even though Microsoft demanded a genre change once they bought bungie.

State of decay was made around the end of 360 life cycle / begining of xbox one lifetime and it sold over five million (more than any ps4 exclusive outside of Uncharted 4). Now it is getting a AAA release this year and going forward. Also, you don't know what game from Sony will get a sequel or not. Sony doesn't have the perfect track record of keeping up with their franchises. Just look at where Socom and GT is at.

Another successful franchise is Forza Horizon even though it didn't come out this generation, it has become big thanks to Forza Horizon 3. In fact, it was the best selling racing game in North America. That is huge and there is a good chance going forward Microsoft will use Minecraft to leverage xbox and Windows store as well. Valve hasn't put out a game since counter strike source. If Microsoft can get the steam treatment with third party support along with their billion dollar franchises that would help a lot and put pressure on Steam.

Minecraft, Halo, Gears and now Forza are all billion dollar franchises. If I were to put my money on it, State of Decay has a good shot at becoming another billion dollar franchise judging how good the first one sold.

Three of those franchises were purchased in. Sony and Nintendo can actually make their own games. The reason why you hear complaints is because Microsoft isnt as talented and thus if they cannot acquire outside talent, their exclusives list is sparse. This would be obviously seen if Microsoft had the amount of third party of Nintendo. This is why Sony always wins, they do what both brands arent that great at. Nintendo lacks third party and Microsoft lacks first party, Sony has both first, second and third party firing on all cylinders. Sony and Nintendo cannot relate to Microsoft development-wise because they never had to purchase franchises that were already successful or hyped to be successful.
