I'd say wait until E3 and see if there will be more bigger games announced for the Switch. If the Switch can keep up it's sales momentum (with MK8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 incoming in the next months I think it will) then you can bet your butt that the big publishers will want a part of the Switch cake too; right now only Squeenix and to a lesser degree Ubisoft are really supporting the console with games.
On the long run I could see it replace your 3DS XL, but I can see why anyone would not buy a Switch just yet.
