Part of what the op said makes sense. They made more consoles this time around so they sold more.

This is clever since they can create buzz with gaming sites reporting how it's breaking records, beating even the mighty ps4. Consumers see it as a must have item to own, the way they did with ps4. Weren't there stories of people going to stores to buy an xb1 and leaving with a ps4 because of everyone else getting a ps4? Casual gamers are much more easily persuaded than most of us here.

Hype and buzz can do wonderful things for a produce. Just look at iphone. I bought a wii because everyone was talking about it. And even though I was planning on buying a psvr, I may not any time soon. Companies need to rethink their console launches.

The problem is that you are doing the same mistake as the OP, stating something unsubstantiated as fact. Where does this story come from? It originated from the OP:s own mind and is therefore the only reference point we have to go by. There are no references to any articles supporting this idea, and press releases ttat doesn´t make sense or any third party reports that would hint to this.

It sounds more like a conspiracy theory than a valid idea of why Nintendo had such a big launch.

France is pretty good example of what OP is saying. 

 

The Switch had a better launch than the PS4 in France (something like 110k against 90k). France is a really Nintendo friendly country, yes, but the PS4 was also completely sold out for weeks (and I know, I ordered one at launch and got it weeks later), when the Switch was still available on Amazon and in some stores 2 days after launch.

So the Switch had way better stocks in France than the PS4 or the Wii (also sold out at 100k back then), it's proven.
