Marketing was bad, relying on the Wii brand (which was passe by 2012) was a bad idea, "Wii U" was a meaningless name to anyone not steeped in Nintendo corporate group think, the controller looked like a Fisher Price toy (baby's first tablet), they were ditched by casuals for smartphones/tablets, the first year library was poor and too focused on casualware, Splatoon came too late in the life cycle, it was expensive, underpowered, and the "gimmick" of switching from TV to "tablet play" but not being actually able to take the tablet further than the same room in many cases was something useful to like 4% of people.

That about cover it?
